Why Tallow

Our love of tallow began from trying to create a more natural lifestyle. After years of producing our own beef, we started adopting a ‘top to tail’ mentality. In doing so we learnt the benefits and range of products that can be made with our beef fat.

Poppy’s Homestead was brought to life after years of refining our tallow methods and formulas for personal use. Instead of buying products to help us heal or hydrate our skin, we began looking into how we could make a natural version with our supply of beef fat. 

Everyday living had us looking into new ways to use tallow and new blends to create - all for specific purposes. For Example:

Being sick of using synthetic face and body creams and spending so much money on a 5 or 7 step skincare routine, there had to be a way to use one product for everything. Initially, by blending oils to use daily, which worked brilliantly, however, with access to so much tallow, surely there was something else to be created. By researching methods such as whipping the tallow, we could produce a product that we would actually use. A single product that would work for both the face and body. Eventually learning to infuse different botanicals and elements into our tallow to enhance the benefits for both the face and body, our first passion was born.

Shortly after my second child was born, she developed a severe nappy rash, after trying off the shelf products we once again looked into how we could create a working product. By infusing the stinging nettles harvested from our property, and mixing together with our tallow, a balm for skin irritations was created. 

Family members with complaints of aches and pains encouraged research for natural healers and anti-inflammatory plants. Soon our Relieve Balm was created. 

Years of struggling with cracked heals, a rich and heavy whip was on the drawing board. Tallow, shea butter and castor oil eventually coming together to not only begin to heal soles but also providing a deeper sleep. 

Every single one of our products has been curated by hand, with beef fat rendered by hand and developed into products we use both for our family and friends. We loved the products we were making so much, we thought you might like them too.
